Buying a Battery Powered Chainsaw: What We Recommend

A battery powered chainsaw can be a great investment if you’re looking for light to mid-duty performance on a smaller property.

Battery saws are convenient, they’re usually priced competitively when compared to gas powered saws, and if you choose the right model, you can even get some good power out of a cordless saw.

Your most important consideration will be what you want to use a new battery powered chainsaw for.

If your cutting tasks mostly include light trimming, pruning, limb cutting, woodworking, yard cleanup, and firewood cutting, then you’re going to have no problem with a quality chainsaw.

Even if you need to perform bush clearing or if you want to cut down some smaller trees, then a high quality battery powered chainsaw will usually be all that you need.

Let’s take a look at three popular models, and what they can offer you in terms of power and performance.

Black+Decker LCS1020 20V Battery Powered Chainsaw

Black & Decker is a name that has become synonymous with high quality power tools, and it’s safe to say that you won’t be disappointed with this 10” chainsaw, provided you know what to expect from the unit.

This is a 20V cordless device that can provide good cutting power for jobs like firewood cutting, bush clearing, pruning, and limb removal.

It will be able to cut down some smaller trees, but being a 10” chainsaw you’ll need to be aware that it won’t perform as well as a larger chainsaw, and if tree removal is your main purpose then you’ll be more suited to a larger battery chainsaw like the  DEWALT DCCS690M1 .

The chain installed on the chainsaw is a 10” Oregon chain, designed for low kickback and easy cutting. You can tension the chain from the side of the unit, with a tensioning dial built into the device.

This means there are no tools required for one of the most common maintenance tasks. You’ll need to keep the chainsaw topped up with bar and chain oil, and there’s a handy filler and transparent reservoir on top of the unit, which lets you know exactly when you’re getting low on oil.

The 20V battery is 2AH capacity, which makes it perfect for operating at this voltage. For light work like pruning or bush clearing, you’ll be able to make up to 150 cuts on a single charge.

For larger pieces of firewood or tree limbs, cuts can be reduced, sometimes to around 30 – 40 cuts on a single charge. It’s difficult to provide any accurate number considering the varying nature of chainsaw jobs, but you can be confident that this will provide adequate running time that is comparable to a single tank from a small gas powered chainsaw.

Handling is excellent with this chainsaw, and it weighs just 7.2 pounds. This reduces fatigue which makes for overall safer operation of the chainsaw, and also means it’s perfect for first time users who haven’t operated either an electric or gas powered chainsaw in the past.

DeWALT DCCS690M1 40V Chainsaw

With a 40V battery pack, this is a battery powered chainsaw that can approach the performance level of some smaller gas powered chainsaws. It will be able to perform light duty work with ease, and will even be able to cut through some larger pieces of wood, just like a smaller gas chainsaw.

Due to the high capacity and high voltage battery, there is some compromise when it comes weight, and you’ll be looking at around 18.4 pounds including the bar, chain, and battery pack.

This makes it heavier than some smaller gas powered chainsaws, but with some unique advantages.

One key advantage (inherent to all battery chainsaws) is the fact that you’ll have no fumes or emissions when the chainsaw is running.

This chainsaw also runs quieter than a gas chainsaw, which means it is suitable for suburban work, with the only sound coming from the wood that is being cut.

The 16” bar places this close to the average for gas powered chainsaws, and you will be able to take down some medium sized trees when working with this chainsaw. When it comes to electric battery chainsaws, this is definitely in the upper range of power and capability.

User feedback for this chainsaw has been extremely positive, with users being impressed by the power that they can get from a battery chainsaw. It’s comparable to a small gas powered chainsaw in every respect, without any of the maintenance that is required.

You’ll only need to take care of the bar oil, and charge the battery between uses. You can replace the chain with Oregon OEM replacements, and that’s the only ‘real’ maintenance that you’re ever going to have to do on this chainsaw.

Familiar features like a chain brake, low kickback chain, and tool-free tension adjustment are all present, making this a chainsaw that is easy to recommend if you’re considering going for a battery chainsaw.

The only real downside to purchasing this is the weight and the fact that it is comparable in price to some high quality gas powered chainsaws.

However, if low maintenance and convenience is your ultimate priority, then it’s definitely worth buying. It should also be noted that this chainsaw is available to purchase with either a 4AH or 6AH battery, with the larger battery offering more operating time between charges, but with the same power delivery.

GreenWorks 20362 24V Compact Battery Powered Chainsaw

If you’re looking for something that is small and easy to handle for the lightest workloads, then the  Greenworks 20362 might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Running from a 2Ah battery, this chainsaw can provide around 35 single cuts when working through 4×4 solid wood. This makes it great for firewood cutting, and pruning or clearing around your home.

If you’re cutting smaller limbs or bush, then you’ll get more mileage from your cuts, and full charge time is just 45 minutes with the included battery.

There are some convenient features on this chainsaw which make it perfect for the homeowner who doesn’t want too much maintenance or a high learning curve from a chainsaw. The chainsaw automatically lubricates the bar and chain, and there’s a transparent reservoir window to let you know when you’re running out of oil.

The chain tensioner is built into the side of the unit, and you won’t need tools to perform adjustments. If you don’t need to cut down medium or large sized trees and your chainsaw tasks will be modest in workload, then this is a great unit to get started with.

Weighing just 7.85 pounds, it’s also one of the lightest chainsaws that we’ve seen at Power Tools Ninja.
