Design of the DeWalt DWE7485 8-1/4" Table Saw

The DWE7485 table saw features a handy built-in storage for specific items such as wrenches, blade guards, and miter gauges. Also included with the table saw is a miter gauge, riving knife, and anti-kickback pawls, push stick, as well a few other items.

Table

DeWalt created this smaller version of their 10-inch table saw to meet the Underwriters Laboratories' standards when a rule was proposed in 2017. The rule was to limit the depth of cut to 3.5 millimeters after 2015 had an estimated 33,400 table saw-related emergenices.

Fence

The fence on the DWE7485 uses a rack and pinion system, and the rails have a built-in measuring tape. The fence itself is attached with a clamp and mounted on either side of the blade. The most you can rip is 24-½” to the right and 12" to the left.

At the bottom of the saw is a 19" x 19" surface that lifts out to the left or right. When fully extended, you can make a 24.5" cut.

Dust Collection

There are two dust ports: One measures 2-½ inches and can fit many shop vacs. The other is underneath the table saw and has a large opening that can handle shop-size dust extraction hoses.

Safety

Of the estimated 33,400 table saw emergencies, about 30,800 (92%) are likely related to the victim making contact with the saw blade. Safety starts and ends with the blade guard.

Switch Lock

One of the safety features included is the switch lock. The switch lock stops the tool from turning ON should the power button be pressed accidentally.

Blade Safety

The blade guards are transparent, which enables you to see the blade as it makes its cut. The blade brake stops the blade from slicing after the power button is pushed.

Anti-Kickback Assembly

This table saw prevents the board from jumping or "kicking back" when you use the table saw. Kickbacks are extremely dangerous and can cause severe injuries.

Power Safety

This version has a power-loss reset, which keeps the saw from starting if you lose power. The power button has a guard to keep it from being accidentally turned on. The included push stick keeps your hands and fingers safe when pushing your material through the blade.

Maintenance

Performing maintenance is an important part of keeping the DeWalt DWE7485 Table Saw running in top form, it'll also help maximize the saws service life. But before cleaning, removing attachments, or performing any maintenance, be sure to shut the table saw OFF and disconnect the power source, this will help lower the risk of serious injury.

Lubrication

If the blade becomes difficult to raise or lower, you'll need to clean and grease the height adjustment screws by doing the following:

  • Rotate the saw on its side
  • Clean and lubricate the height adjustment screw threads using a general-purpose grease

Cleaning

Keep dirt and dust out of the table saw's storage area. Blow dirt off with dry air as needed - you should always wear eye protection and masks when performing this task. Never use harsh chemicals for washing the non-metallic parts of the saw, as they may damage the materials.

Blade Guard

Check the upper and lower blade guards and the dust extraction tube, and remove any chips, dust, or blockages as needed. Keep the ventilation slots free of debris and regularly clean the housing with a soft cloth.

Dust Housing Collection

Clean the dust housing collection area frequently by doing the following:

  • Rotate the saw on its side. The bottom part of the unit needs to be accessible
  • Open the dust access door, loosen the two screws and detach the door
  • Clean out additional dust and reattach the door with the screws

Performance

The DeWalt DWE7485 Table Saw is a quality product that's ideal for contractors and carpenters because of it's compact size and portability. However, it does not accept Dado blades, which may be an issue if this is a feature you frequently need.

The rack and pinion system on this saw is difficult to beat and will likely spoil you for any other design. The fence moves equally smooth on the front and back, and provides a clear and accurate cut. The miter gauge is made from thick, sturdy steel, however there is a bit of a wobble which is disappointing, but there's an easy work around covered in the video below to overcome this shortcoming.

Bottom Line

One thing to keep in mind with the DWE74585, is that although this table is easy to use for cutting smaller sized items, if you need to cut something large you'll need assistance. If you're working on a project with others around, this probably will be more of an inconvenience, but if you tend to work alone it'll be a major issue. It's also not ideal for cutting thick wood or hardwood.

If you're looking for a larger saw capable of tackling bigger projects, you should take a look at the DWE7491RS 10" DeWalt Table Saw. You can read our full review HERE.

Another thing to note, is that the saw does not come with a stand. If this isn't your first table saw, you may already have one available, or maybe you plan to use it on another surface where a stand won't be required. But if you need a stand, expect to spend a few additional dollars to purchase one for the saw

However, in the end, there's little doubt that the DeWalt DWE7485 8-¼” Table Saw is a quality product and is an excellent choice for the novice, but we'd be hard pressed to recommend it for the professional, at least for large projects. The affordable price, portable design, and revamped safety features make the DeWalt DWE7485 Table Saw a great choice for smaller projects.

Pros

  • Portable and compact design makes it convenient to transport
  • Multiple safety features protect you and your family
  • Pinion fence and rack system locks the board in place and prevents it from moving
  • It has a 24-½” rip capacity providing up to 5800 RPM

Cons

  • Does not come with a stand
  • Difficult to use for large scale projects because of it's small work area
  • The miter gauge is a bit wobbly right out of the box
