Comparing the DW745 and DWE7480

If your job requires power, then you definitely want the the DW7480 over the DW745. It has a much more powerful motor and can handle the majority of jobs. It's rip capacity is also more impressive, which makes it more efficient for the job site. You'll also find that the DW745 might not be able to handle harder stock as well as the other model.

The biggest downside with the DWE7480 is the difficulty you'll experience when you try to make adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the DWE7480 Stand Up to Frequent Use?

DeWalt is a brand that is known for quality tools, and the longevity of their products are well documented. This unit is designed for job sites and will stand up to regular use in demanding scenarios.

The motor features moving parts that are fully sealed and factory lubricated. This helps to ensure a long operating lifetime of the unit. High-quality construction materials like aluminum and steel also make this suitable as a frequent use tool.

How Portable is the DeWalt DWE7480 Table Saw?

The biggest asset in terms of portability is the relatively low weight of 45 pounds. Because of it's size and weight, the DWE7480 can be easily loaded, unloaded, transported, and carried by a single operator. Portability will be greatly appreciated by any professional that frequently transfers between job sites.

Although it lacks a table saw stand, the ability to be able to quickly pick up and relocated this table saw is a big advantage.

What Power Source is Required?

The DeWalt table saw is a 15 AMP power tool, so it's recommeded that it be connected to a 20 AMP outlet. Other high electricial drain devices should be isolated on a separate circuit, and high-quality cables should always be used.

DeWalt recommends using a cable length no longer than 50 feet, and it should be a 12 gauge AWG cable. For cables up to 25 feet, the cable used should be 14 gauge AWG. These recommendations are for 120v operation.

How Well Does the DWE7480 Perform?

Performance is key to any table saw and it should not be a surprise that th DeWalt DWE7480 offers excellent performance for its size and price range.

High accuracy of cuts, ability to cut hard woods (including red oak and maple), an power to spare when cutting composites or plywood. There should be no complaints about performance when ooperators stay within the specifications of the unit.

It should be noted that anyone looking for a portable saw that supports a dado blade will not find what they're looking for in this model. The arbor is not designed to accept a dado blade set.

What is the Cutting/Rip Capacity?

Rip capacity is up to 24-inches, which is an upgrad over the DeWalt DW745.

If you've been considering a DW745, but weren't impressed by the capacity, then the DWE7480 represents a good upgrade, without a huge price increase.

One disadvantage, and this is consistent across DeWalt portable table saws, is the fact that DeWalt doesn't offer an extension for the outfeed. The integrated adjustable rip fence will, therefore, limit the size of any material used on this saw.

Quality of the Rip Fence

The rip fence is one of the highlights of the unit, both in terms of quality and functionality. It forms part of the table extension and is set on a mechanical runner with plastic teeth.

Movement is smooth, and accuracy is high, even right out of the box. Anybody who has worked with a table saw that features a flimsy sliding and locking rip fence will be pleased with the DeWalt DWE7480.

How is Dust Extraction and Collection Achieved?

The dust port is made from aluminum and has a standard 2-1/2" hose outlet for connection to a dust bag or shop vacuum. This feature will mean less clean-up and better overall operation, and is an indicator of the quality and design of DeWalt products.

Dust extraction is efficient, and any build-up will be minor.

What Safety Features are Included?

The DWE7480 features a guard system for added safety. A push stick is included for those jobs when pushing by hand would be inappropriate. The design also includes a riving knife and an anti-kickback system which grips the wood to prevent injury should the blade catch.

These are all standard features that are shared between table saws of different makes in the compact segment. The blade guard used is designed to allow for easy viewing of the cut in progress.

What are the Maintenance Requirements?

The table surface is aluminum which has been painted with a non-friction surface seal. A dry cloth can be used to clean the table.

Because the motor components are sealed, there is no lubrication necessary on the moving parts.

The gear on the height adjustment mechanism may require cleaning and lubrication. If the blade becomes difficult to raise and lower DeWalt advises a service center call to handle this job.

General cleaning can be achieved with a damp cloth on plastic parts, or a compressed air gun to remove excess sawdust from the unit.

Is it Easy to Use?

The DeWalt DWE7480 has certain features that make it an extremely easy to use table saw, especially for experienced professionals.

The rack and pinion movement and alignment of the rip fence is one feature that makes projects easier to complete. The high cutting potential also helps operators to speed through projects, especially when cutting ply or soft composites.

As can be expected of any quality tool, measurement markings and all labeling is clear and bold. Adjusting the blade angle is also simple, with smooth movement which reinforces the message that this is a high-quality professional grade tool.

The overall compact design should be noted as something that makes this table saw easier to use on virtually any job.

Is the General Construction Quality Good?

Construction quality is of a high standard and is above average for similarly price units.

Robust steel, aluminum, and hardened plastic is used throughout its construction. Testing reveals the unit to be sturdy, and consumer feedback reinforces this fact.

The roll cage type chassis feels solid and protects the unit.

The miter gauge and push stick are of entry-level quality and would be more suitable on lower-end table saws. The blde included is decent quality, but being a general purpose construction blade, it may require an upgrade for more specialized and demanding users.

It also provides ample safety information and examples of specific cuts and usage scenarios. Compared to the average instruction manual the one included with the DWE7480 is easily above average.

Tips for New Owners

The manual includes a section on the riving knife that may be overlooked by some users. If the knife is not moving during the initial inspection, check that the locking knob is unscrewed by around three turns before it can be pushed in. This allows the knife to be set for through-cuts.

Owners should read the entire manual, even with previous table saw experience. Adjustment instructions are highly detailed, and it will save time when tuning the unit for the first use.

How Much Does it Cost?

For a table saw of this quality, the DeWalt DWE7480 is competitively and fairly priced. Check out the most current price HERE.

What Accessories are Recommended?

A dust collection bag is a good investment for anyone who doesn't have access to a shop vacuum, which will likely be the majority of users on job sites. Many new owners choose to upgrade the miter gauge.

Another good upgrade is to invest in some new blades. The DeWalt DW3106P5 60-Tooth Crosscutting and 32-Tooth General Purpose 10-Inch Saw Blade Combo Pack is a good investment.

A high-quality table saw stand is also a worthwhile accessory. The DeWalt DW7440RS Rolling Saw Stand is one of the best tables available for this particular saw.

Fine-Tuning the DeWalt DWE7480

The most common adjustment required on the DWE7480 is to make the blade parallel to the rip fence. This is a relatively simple task. Here's what you need to do:

  •
Measure the blade from both ends to the miter gauge slot. Conflicting measurements will mean that the blade is out of alignment.
  • Locate the two hex screws that hold the trunnion at the bottom rear of the table saw.
  • Loosen the screws. This will allow the blade to move.
  • Adjust the blade in relation to the miter gauge slot, measure both ends of the blade, and retighten the hex screws to set the new alignment.

Comprehensive fine tuning for all table elements can be found in the instruction manual. There's even detailed diagrams.
