Owning a portable generator can be an absolute necessity for many households, particularly for families that live in disaster prone areas or areas where moderate to strong storms can knock out electricity at any time during the year.
Generators aren’t just used for disaster preparedness, and can also be used for camping, hunting, and fishing trips, or simply for working with appliances or power tools outside, where a mains power connection is not available.
For serious work or for powering multiple or large appliances, a stronger generator will be necessary.
The DuroMax XP4400E is a great example of a generator that hits power output figures that are above average, with 4400 Watt maximum surge power from a 7HP motor.
Let’s take a look in my in depth review and see if this could be the right model for you.

Size and First Impressions
The DuroMax XP4400E features a fairly generic generator design, with an open chassis and no shrouding around the motor components.
It has a sturdy industrial look, which is backed up by the metal roll cage and wheels that are attached to the unit. Upon first inspection, the XP4400E looks like a high quality generator, and the blue and black color scheme is attractive without being overly garish or eye catching.
The size of the unit is fairly significant, especially compared to some smaller generators. The actual dimensions are 24 x 24 x 36 Inches, so it’s not so large that it would become impractical.
The fact it is mounted on wheels makes it easier to move it around, and the total weight of 120 pounds is about what you would expect from a generator with performance figures like the XP4400E.
Overall, the size and first impressions are positive, getting us off to a good start when looking at this model.
How is the DuroMax XP4400E Powered?
Like the majority of portable generators of this size, this DuroMax unit runs on unleaded gasoline to generate power.
This makes it convenient and easy to power for the average user. The use of gasoline also makes it cost effective.
The motor is lubricated with 10/30 SAE motor oil, which will be available at any automotive or large home department store. The four-gallon gas tank is suitable for most outdoor work or for powering small appliances and electronic devices at home during power outages and emergencies.
What is the Power Output of this Generator?
Power output is key to any generator and the use that you will get from it.
The unit runs from a 7HP motor which is able to produce up to 4000W under surge loads.
General loads for continuous use are up to 3500W. This makes this model more powerful than some of the smaller portable generators (models that generally don’t use wheels or a stand), and means that you’ll be able to power some larger appliances, tools, or run a number of electronic devices simultaneously.
Although this is not large enough to power a large home for an extended period of time (particularly a home with an electric water pumping system), it’s still plenty for disaster and emergency use, or for use on jobsites or for outdoor camping and other activities.
If you’ve been looking for a generator that provides a step up from entry level gasoline models, then this one is well worth considering.
What is the Run Time from General Use?
Run time from this model is impressive, allowing for up to 8 hours from a full tank of gas, when the generator is under 50% load.
If you’re using the full 3500W, you can expect 3 – 4 hours of use. Every case will vary, and for light use, it will be possible to run the generator for 10 or even 12 hours. 50% load is the benchmark for most generators, and a full 8-hour day of running will be sufficient for most owners.
Keep in mind that when running electric tools that aren’t powered on continuously, the generator will easily exceed the average running time.
What is the Noise Rating of the DuroMax XP4400E?
Noise is important for any generator or large appliance, and it’s good to know that the designers of the DuroMax XP4400E have been able to keep the noise levels to a minimum.
The muffler has been designed to provide sufficient exhaust without creating too much additional noise, and the motor itself runs at a relatively low decibel rating.
Overall, the generator will only produce around 69dB of noise when standing right next to the unit, and this will decrease as you move away.
In most cases when it is being used outside for power tools, the noise of the generator will be less than the tools themselves. For providing power during a storm or power outage, the generator likely won’t be heard from inside of the home.
To put it in perspective, consider that general conversational speech is around 70dB, and a busy residential road is around 80dB.
A quiet office will usually have an average sound rating of 50dB, and a quiet television or stereo system in a living room will usually average 60dB. This shows that the DuroMax portable generator is quiet for what it does, and noise will never be a concern if you decide to invest in this unit.
How Much Maintenance is Required?
You won’t find a gasoline powered generator that is maintenance free, however, it is important to find a model where maintenance won’t be excessive for the average user.
The user manual includes a handy maintenance schedule to ensure that new owners can perform the correct maintenance steps at regular intervals. For regular use, the only required maintenance would be topping up the gas and checking engine oil and the air filter.
As the schedule progresses, owners will need to eventually clean or replace the air filter, fuel filter, and spark plug.
The gasoline engine uses an aluminum block, which means that oil is critically important. A high quality synthetic oil will offer the best protection. Never run this generator with low oil.
If you’re worried about the level of maintenance and this will be your first generator, then you’ll be pleased to know that there’s nothing intimidating when it comes to keeping this generator in top condition.
Potential Applications for this Generator
There are a number of potential applications for the DuroMax XP4400E, including home power replacement during storms or other blackouts, or for outdoor work using power tools and other equipment.
This generator would also be useful for camping or other outdoor activities where you need a reliable source of power. To get an idea of what you could use this for, let’s take a look at some common pieces of equipment and their power draw.
Keep in mind that the peak power available is 4000W – 4400W, and operating power is 3500W.
- Family Refrigerator or Large Freezer – 1200W (starting) 200W running.
- Average 32” Flat Screen Television – 120W running.
- Laptop Computer – 250W running.
- Circular Saw – 2300W (starting) 1400W running.
- Hand Drill – 900W (starting) 600W running.
The generator would be able to comfortably run any of these devices individual, or more than one at the same time (providing the total wattage is kept in consideration).
Running a number of LED or incandescent lights, charging cell phones, and charging laptop batteries, would all create negligible power draw, and would be possible with this generator.
For specific tools or appliances that you want to use, simply check the manufacturer specifications for power draw, and compare this to the maximum power offered by this generator.
How Fuel Efficient is the DuroMax XP4400E
Fuel efficiency is not just about getting the maximum run time out of a generator, but it can also impact the environmental impact that a generator has.
This particular model is EPA compliant, which means that it has met necessary standards that have been set by the United States federal government.
When the generator is well maintained, it will operate efficiently, releasing minimal levels of contaminants as gas is burned in the motor.
Is This an Easy Generator to Use?
Ease of use is important for home use, so it’s relieving to know that the DuroMax XP4400E doesn’t have any significant learning curve, and doesn’t require any special or previous knowledge of gas powered generators.
The user manual covers all of the important functions, safety steps, and maintenance, and the device itself is intuitive and clearly labeled. Connecting appliances or extension boxes will not be a problem for the majority of users, and even the startup sequence is a simple process.
What Power Outlets Are Included on the Generator?
Extension cables can be used with the standard 120-volt AC outlets, and household devices and appliances can be connected directly to these outlets.
There’s also a 12V DC connection for battery devices, and a NEMAL14-30R 120/240-volt AC receptacle for devices that require it. Overall, this is a simple plug-in generator that won’t present any challenges for home users.
What Kind of Warranty Does this Model Include?
Investing in a generator means a significant amount of money is being exchanged, and it’s important to know that you will be protected from defects or workmanship related failures in the future.
DuroMax offers a 30-day replacement warranty for faulty units, and the generator is also covered by a full 1-Year parts warranty. Freight charges are covered by the buyer, as well as return shipping.
DuroMax offers support in the United States which can be reached on 1800-629-4329. Staff will be able to answer queries and provide assistance with any warranty concerns.
