If it’s time to buy a new chainsaw, or even a replacement saw for one that has gone beyond its maintenance life, then you’re going to have some tough decisions to make when it comes to shopping.
Even between the leading brands, there are a number of compelling options, and at times it can be outright difficult to choose. Not only do you need a chainsaw that suits your needs, but you’ll also need one that performs well, and that is priced within your budget.
If you’re looking for one for a larger or rural property, then the Husqvarna 450 18-Inch saw could be just what you need.
With a trusted name, decent 18-inch bar length, and good performance, this chainsaw review should help you to discover if this is going to be your next purchase.
With a manageable size, 3.2 horsepower, and a gas powered engine, this chainsaw has been designed for medium duty use in yards or on rural properties.
It’s great for domestic cutting and can be used for minor tree felling, or breaking up fallen trees on your property.
It can even be used for pruning and cutting firewood. This is a great all-round saw for homeowners who have a fair amount of land and yard space.
Frequency of Use
Designed for long life, it is not unreasonable to expect that this Husqvarna 450 chainsaw could cut six cords of timber per year, and that wouldn’t even be pushing its capabilities.
For domestic purposes, this saw will be able to run as often as needed, provided it is well maintained with the right fuel mix and lubrication.
Continuous use will allow for 30 to 40 minutes of operation per tank when putting it under medium load.
All chainsaws are considered to be portable, but there are some key features that make this one even more portable than some competing models.
The 18-inch blade makes it easy to handle and carry, and the handle placement means that the saw is well balanced. Without fuel the unit weighs just 10.8 lb., making it easily manageable for the average user.
This is a gas powered chainsaw, which not only means that it has plenty of power, but being gas powered also helps to boost the portability.
It will operate virtually anywhere that you go, providing you have fuel available.
Performance & Cutting Speed
When it comes to any chainsaw, performance is going to be one of the key factors when it comes down to deciding what to purchase.
This chainsaw is not the biggest available, but it is one of the easiest to handle. Even though it lacks size, there isn’t much missing in the way of performance.
Some owners have used this saw extensively over a year, cutting up to 20 cords of wood, and even felling live wood on mid-size trees, without problems. 80ft pines have been felled using this saw, which is an excellent indicator of its solid performance.
Cutting speed will depend on the type of wood that is being cut, but with 3.2hp available, this tool should be considered on the higher end of the scale, and will easily outperform mains electric or battery powered chain saws.
Check out the video below, I think it will help you get a good feel of what this chainsaw is capable of:
Overall handling of this unit is great, thanks to the light weight, balanced motor/bar, and low vibration when in operation.
Quick warm up and smooth running make this an excellent domestic and yard work chainsaw, and the light weight nature of it makes it extremely easy to handle.
It is the lack of vibration that has been mostly praised by consumers, and testing reveals this to be one of the strongest points of this tool.
Even when cutting hard wood, there are no major vibrations or impacts that are transferred through the handle. In fact, if not for the sound of the saw, you might even imagine that you were working with a very different tool.
Limited vibration makes it easier to achieve straight and true cuts, which will be a huge benefit for any new owner.

Guide Bar Length
The Husqvarna 450 comes with an 18-inch guide bar with .325” pitch.
This is the standard model that will be ideal for most users.
The slightly shortened bar means that the saw handles better, without sacrificing too much in terms of versatility or cutting performance.
If necessary, a 20” bar can be fitted, and there is even a Husqvarna variant (Model 966 96 34-40) that comes with a 20” bar.
The most important safety feature on this saw is the inertia activated anti-kickback mechanism.
Chainsaw safety is something very important that you simply can’t ignore, as chainsaws are the leading cause of injury in the forestry industry, and if you consider that even experienced professionals are at risk, then you could also be when using one on your own property.
Husqvarna has taken this into consideration, integrating a chain break, blade stop and anti-kickback mechanism, this saw has the right features to keep you safe when you’re working outside.
Always use the correct safety gear, including boots, comfortable safety clothing, and safety googles, and always follow all manufacturer specific instructions before operating your new saw.
Being a gas powered chainsaw, the Husqvarna 450 requires more maintenance than the average electric power tool.
The blade must be kept lubricated (there’s a handy reservoir built into the design), and it’s necessary to use a mixture of fuel and oil to ensure that damage isn’t caused to the engine.
The air filter will require periodic replacement, as will the fuel filter, and the spark plug will need to be replaced once it has worn out.
For blade adjustment, it is necessary to use the included Husqvarna multi-tool, which may be considered a downside when compared to some other competing devices (such as some STIHL models that feature tool-free adjustment).
Ease of use
If you’re experienced with using a chainsaw then you will find that this unit offers excellent portability and light weight, and great overall ease of use.
If you’re less experienced or learning how to use a chainsaw for the first time, then this could well be one of the best units to get started on.
Not only does it help that it is lightweight and almost vibration-free, but it is also easy to start, thanks to the Smart Start system that reduces cord resistance.
General Construction Quality
Overall construction quality is very good, as could be expected from a brand like Husqvarna, however, that is not to say that this saw is without problems.
While it is standard to have a plastic gas tank, it would be preferable if this tank were protected by a metal shield. This would prevent debris or even a faulty chain from puncturing the gas tank.
A small minority of owners have had units that were not operational out of the box, requiring attention from an authorized service center.
This suggests that there could be a minor issue with QA from the factory, however it is important to note that only 10 % of all reviews have been completely negative, and 81% of all reviews were highly positive.
This unit comes fully assembled without additional accessories.
This means that you get the chainsaw, the chain, the guide bar, and a basic adjusting tool.
To get going out of the box, you will need to purchase fuel, and you may also need safety accessories, which we will cover in the recommended accessories section.
Most likely designed to reduce production costs, the user manual covers multiple models.
This can make for some slightly overwhelming reading the first time. This does not mean that it is lacking in information.
It would have been preferable if Husqvarna developed a single user manual for the 450 model.
Make sure that you consider the fact that this is a medium duty saw.
It is intended for domestic purposes or medium duty work on rural properties. This could include tree felling, pruning, arborist type cutting, firewood cutting, or other uses.
If you need a saw that is for heavier duty work, such as intensive tree clearing, then you’ll be looking for something more along the lines of the Husqvarna 460 Rancher.
Consumer Ratings & Reviews
This saw enjoys extremely positive consumer feedback, which reflects the positivity in our own review.
There are numerous highlights that can be taken from consumer reviews. One reviewer had high praise for the saw, particularly in its ability to outperform a Sears model.
Some owners have commented that starting is simple in most conditions, and that the saw can often be started in two simple pulls of the starter cord. Hardwood cutting ability is another regular area of praise in consumer reviews, as is the ease of using the tensioner.
This Husqvarna chainsaw can be found in the $300-$400 range , making this saw a significant investment, but one that should reward you with long operating life and high performance.
Recommended Accessories for New Owners
If you plan to get regular use out of your saw, then you may want to invest in a replacement chain.
Husqvarna offers a 2 pack 18″ Chainsaw Chains .325-Inch x .050-Inch Original for a good price.
If you don’t own safety googles and want to invest in an all in one safety device, then this Husqvarna ProForest Chain Saw Helmet System would be a great investment.
Regarding fuel, you’ll need a pre mixed oil and fuel mix like the Husqvarna fuel pack. You’ll also need Husqvarna Bar & Chain Oil for lubrication.
Shipping & Packing
The unit comes assembled and most consumers have had nothing but positive feedback when it comes to shipments from the largest ecommerce retailer.
One thing to keep in mind is that gas powered tools cannot be returned via shipping, due to safety concerns.
Manufacturer Support & Warranty
Husqvarna is a well-known worldwide brand with a reputation for quality and excellent customer support.
Unfortunately, when it comes to consumer feedback with this model, there have been a minority of consumers who had a poor experience with phone support.
Even so, there have been no complaints when it comes to authorized service centers, and Husqvarna does offer a competitive two-year warranty, which is extendable up to four years

Husqvarna 450 Review: Some Final Thoughts
Our Husqvarna 450 review showed a reliable chainsaw that has the performance that can stand up to more expensive units, provided you keep things within the realms of medium duty work.
There do seem to be some quality issues with a small percentage of units, and there has been some negative feedback regarding phone support, however, on the whole this is an easy unit to recommend if you’re looking for a gas powered chainsaw that performs well, while remaining relatively affordable.
