When you need a reliable chainsaw that can deal with medium and some heavier duty jobs, you’ll want to buy something that is both reliable and capable when it comes to cutting.
Whether you’re regularly cutting firewood, or even clearing hardwood trees, the Husqvarna 460 Rancher 24 Inch ChainSaw is one of the better options that you could go for.
Well balanced but with a large 24 inch blade guide, this saw is a great investment that is backed by one of the most trusted names in outdoor power tools.
So, without any further due, let’s dive into our Husqvarna 460 Rancher chainsaw review!
Offering a high amount of torque, a longer guide bar, and high RPM operation (up to 9000 RPM), this is the perfect chainsaw for rural use or domestic use on larger properties.
Despite the high power that this saw provides, it weighs just 12.79 lb., which helps to eliminate operator fatigue.
This saw is gas powered so it’s perfect for use outside, whether you’re pruning, clearing large trees, fallen trees, or breaking up green wood into more manageable pieces.
This is ideal for someone who has tried an electric saw, but found that it wasn’t portable or powerful enough for heavier tasks.
Frequency of Use
Regular use from this chainsaw will not be a problem, and it has been designed to provide many long years of operating life.
This is definitely a chainsaw that could be used every day with the right maintenance, and most medium to heavy duty cutting jobs should be possible with around 30 minutes operating time from a full tank of gas.
If you’ve found that a smaller saw or even an electric saw wasn’t standing up to demanding conditions, then this gas powered saw will be a better alternative.
The weight of a chainsaw is essential, especially when it comes to moving it around your property, or even loading it onto a truck bed.
At just 12.79 lb., this unit is portable in every sense of the word. Being gas powered, it can be used virtually anywhere (excluding small indoor spaces), and providing you have gas and oil, you’ll have no problem using it on your property or out on the field.
Husqvarna has to be given credit for providing a relatively lightweight saw that doesn’t compromise when it comes to performance.
Power is provided by a 60cc engine that achieves 3.62HP at peak operation.
It’s a two cycle engine that requires engine lubricant to be mixed with the fuel. The best option for fueling this would be to go for one of the recommended Husqvarna fuels, such as this Husqvarna XP Pre-Mixed Fuel and Engine Oil Quart (3 Pack).
Performance and Cutting Speed
When it comes down to it, performance is going to be the key determining factor of whether any particular chainsaw is right for you.
With 3.62HP and up to 3.4Nm of torque, this saw is not going to struggle with heavy duty wood cutting, even with harder woods.
The large 24 inch bar length also helps to make the performance great on this particular model. While some smaller models (such as the Husqvarna 450) come with blades as small as 18 inches, this saw won’t struggle when you need to cut through larger trees or lumber.
The torque helps to keep cutting speeds high, as does the excellent chain with 84 individual drive links.
The video below is rather long (more than 8 minutes) but I think it will be useful for you to watch. It shows the whole process of unboxing, doing the first start and then the first cut.
If you need an idea of just how easy this saw is to handle, then you only need to look to some of the consumer reviews that are available online.
A diverse range of customers have found that good balance, combined with good power and cutting speed, make this a dream to handle, particularly when cutting through larger trees.
The vibration dampening system does help significantly with usability and handling, as many of the violent impacts are completely eliminated.
This is also a cool video, it shows actual footage of a test cut using the Husqvarna 460 Rancher. Look how well it performs!
Guide Bar Length
The 24 inch guide bar makes this saw more versatile than some of the smaller models, and it won’t be a problem to cut down trees that are up to 28 inches in diameter.
If you’re an experienced arborist, then you will even be able to fell some larger hardwoods.
24 inches sits well in the professional category, but could be considered excessive if you’re only looking for a smaller chainsaw for basic domestic cutting jobs.
The low vibration system on this chainsaw can help to improve safety by reducing operator fatigue.
Remaining alert while sawing can help to reduce accidents, and this is also boosted by the anti-kickback system, which senses dangerous levels of inertia to shut off the saw.
The hand guard is standard on this chainsaw and virtually every other modern chainsaw, but it should always be kept in mind that chainsaws are inherently the most dangerous saws available, and should always be used in safe environments, while adhering to all manufacturer recommendations.
Maintenance includes ensuring that air and fuel filters are cleaned and replaced when necessary, and also that the blade oil is kept topped up.
Keeping the blade oiled will help to keep cutting performance good, while also reducing any deterioration of the blade, over time.
If you haven’t used a gas powered tool before, you will find maintenance requirements to be moderate, but not excessive when compared to electric tools. The built in centrifugal air cleaner can help to reduce the maintenance required, while extending the life of the replaceable air filter.
Ease of use
Ease of use is on par with other professional level chainsaws, but it is important to note that this tool should not be used by inexperienced operators without supervision.
If this is your first gas powered chainsaw, it can be beneficial to check online tutorials, or ask an experienced friend or family member to assist you when first using the saw.
The light weight makes it relatively easy to get used to this tool, and it also features an easy start pull chord that reduces resistance and quickens startup times when working with the saw.
General Construction Quality
Construction quality is good, but there may be some consistency problems with these units from the factory.
Both steel and plastic is used in construction, to achieve a good balance of weight and performance. Fittings are generally good and the majority of consumers have found that saws are near ready to go, right out of the box.
However, a minority of consumers have experienced faulty unit deliveries, as well as power issues with their chainsaws. These cases have been isolated, and do not reflect the overall construction quality or overwhelmingly positive feedback for the Husqvarna 460 Rancher.
The chainsaw comes complete with the body assembly, blade guide, and blade. There are no fuel accessories or external safety equipment, so these items will need to be purchased separately.
The saw comes provided with a comprehensive 44 page user manual that covers everything from assembly and fuel handling, to working techniques and maintenance.
For the best experience, the manual should be fully covered before operating the chainsaw.
Always assemble this saw according to the manufacturer specifications, and pay close attention when tensioning the blade.
There should be no sag on the underside of the blade when the unit is held horizontally, but it should still be possible to turn the blade by hand.
Refer to page 17 of the user manual for complete bar and chain instructions.
Consumer Ratings & Reviews
Consumer feedback is positive, with more than 88% of customers awarding a 4/5 or 5/5 rating on the world’s largest ecommerce website.
One particularly helpful review spoke of the ease of getting the saw running smoothly right out of the box.
A number of reviewers have commented on the construction quality of the saw, noting that the overall unit feels solid, despite the overall light weight.
This chainsaw is priced above entry level units, but reflects the power and overall quality that you can expect from a Husqvarna tool in this price range.
Recommended extra accessories
Safety equipment is essential when using this saw, including gloves and adequate eye/ear protection. For hand protection, these Husqvarna Saw Protection Gloves have been well reviewed.
For an all in one helmet/ear protection/face protection system, this Hard Hat Forestry Safety Helmet & Ear Muffs is recommended.
Shipping & Packing
Minor assembly is required, including attaching the blade guide and blade (extensive instructions are provided in the user manual).
The unit comes well packed with foam and cardboard, which should protect it from any damage in transit.
Manufacturer Support and Warranty
Husqvarna offers phone support for warranty queries, however any warranty fixes need to be performed at an authorized retailer. Helpdesk staff will be able to direct you to the closest location.
This may be a problem for some advanced users, who would otherwise be able to perform repairs with some guidance over the phone.
A basic two year warranty is included, with extended warranties available at purchase from select sellers.

Our Husqvarna 460 Rancher Review: Final Thoughts
Husqvarna has presented a highly capable saw in the form of the 460 Rancher chainsaw.
Some of the benefits of a gas powered saw include being able to take it almost anywhere, and having the ability to perform extensive outdoor property maintenance.
Many of the components are replaceable, which can make this a better long term investment when compared to an electric saw. As with some other Husqvarna saw products, the consumer feedback has not been entirely positive.
Feedback sits on two extremes of the spectrum, with either high praise, or dissatisfaction due to faulty units. Although this could suggest some quality control issues in manufacturing, the long warranty period and widely available service centers mean that there is always option for recourse with a faulty unit.
Because the vast majority of feedback is positive, you should not shy away from this saw if you need a powerful unit and larger blade bar for your outdoor cutting tasks.
